He takes the easiest form of entry, sometimes it’s a rock through the window to gain entry that way. And if they have difficulty getting into any of those then they’ll use force. Oftentimes by the time law enforcement gets there the perpetrator is already gone. Alarm systems are a momentary distraction to them. A lot of times there aren’t enough officers available to respond to the alarm which creates a delay; so there’s not an immediate deterrent to the person who’s breaking into the house. The people that are victims that have their property stolen will seldom recover their property. I’ve seen enough victims and I’ve dealt with enough victims and I know the stress and the heartbreak that it causes a victim. I don’t want to be a victim.

  • Pause newspaper subscriptions or ask a neighbor to collect them. To a thief, a pile of newspapers out front is a definite sign that you aren’t home.
  • Ask a neighbor to collect your mail. You don’t want this piling up where it can be seen or even stolen.
  • Ask a neighbor watch your house for suspiciously placed objects. Objects in strange places are markers for thieves.
  • Don’t post vacation photos until you are home. It may be tempting, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

  • Unless you have Security Screens, keep all doors and windows closed & securely fastened.
  • Always lock the door to an attached garage. Don’t rely on your automatic garage door opener for security.
  • Keep large plants away from entrances and walkways. While large, ornate hedges may be beautiful, they also provide a hiding place for burglars who need only a minute to break in through a non security screen door or window.
